A NEW service to resolve disputes before they reach court - and cut down on potentially huge legal bills - has been set up in Kidderminster.
The aim of Wyre Forest Mediation is to help organisations and individuals sort out problems before the opposing sides become too entrenched.
The service, set up by Kidderminster law firm Douglas Wood Thompson, is aimed at businesses involved in contract and payment disputes, individuals locked in rows with neighbours or landlords, partners on the verge of separating or divorcing, parents in dispute about their child's schooling and cases of personal negligence and injury.
The firm has become the first in Wyre Forest to set up a separate mediation "arm" to its existing practice, with a mediation suite created next door to its office in Worcester Street.
Partner Gareth Thompson, 46, a solicitor for 21 years and an experienced mediator, has developed the initiative.
"As soon as any two sides in a dispute become entrenched in their views and turn to lawyers for resolution, they are all too often propelled inexorably towards the courts," said Mr Thompson.
"That leaves all sides emotionally and financially drained and distressed.
"What we are offering is an alternative way forward, which gives organisations and individuals the chance to come together on neutral territory to resolve their differences themselves.
"It is a fascinating and hugely rewarding process for all concerned, and ultimately can be a fraction of the cost of resolving a dispute by other legal action."
Mr Thompson will be supported by colleague Debbie Fowler, an expert in family law, who will provide specialist matrimonial mediation for couples and spouses in dispute.
