HISTORY SOCIETY: The subject of Moreton History Society's latest exhibition at the town library is local post offices and includes a 1902 photo of the 73-strong postal staff with their own brass band. The exhibits come from the society's archives which continue to grow through gifts. Recent acquisitions include six early postcards of Moreton, pictures of school groups taken by S A Freeman early in the last century and a copy of a 1928 watercolour of Church Street.
The speaker at the society's November meeting at the WI Hall was David Viner, former curator of the Corinium and Cotswold Heritage museums, who illustrated his talk on Cotswold milestones and turnpikes with colour transparencies.
The Christmas party will be at the Swan on Friday, December 5, and the society's Christmas calendars are selling well.
A recent committee meeting was told the society's finances were much improved as a result of the annual subscription being raised from £3 to £5. Membership stood at 102. The possibility of an outing to Salisbury cathedral and Stonehenge in next year's summer programme was discussed.
INTEREST AND LEISURE CLUB: The meeting on November 12 was held in the British Legion with Mr Ben Jeffrey in the chair. He opened proceedings by asking members to stand in silence in remembrance of Mrs Cother, a long-time club member.
He then called for the presentation of two cheques (£500 each raised at two coffee mornings) to be made to Jane Smith, deputy matron of Moreton Hospital and Mr David Glaisyer who said the money would go to upgrade the treatment room. On behalf of the County Air Ambulance Ann Newell received a cheque.
After the business the chairman opened the AGM.
The outings secretary Mr Alan Noyse gave his report and said he was saddened so many outings were poorly supported and hoped for better numbers for 2004. .
Mr Cliff Bradley, secretary, gave a review of all the activities for 2003 and thanked everyone for their help and co-operation.
Finally in his report, Ben Jeffrey praised his committee individually for their support and hard work.
Mr and Mrs Bryan Baldwin received gift tokens and a bouquet on retirement from the committee.
Praise went to the organisers of the dances held fortnightly and the Friday rambling activities and to the British Legion for the use of the hall.
Mr David Cham was elected as vice-chairman and Mr Colin Hancock joined the committee.
FLOWER CLUB: Held the October meeting at Broadwell Village Hall. The demonstrator Mrs Lorena Dyer gave a wonderful evening with her arrangements which lived up to her title of That Special Little Something.
The next meeting is at 7.30pm today when Mrs Sue Davies will give a demonstration entitled Well I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day.
