PLANS for a skatepark in Pershore have hit a setback after town councillors failed to agree on where it should be built.
Earlier this year it was announced that £20,000 had been identified in Wychavon's budget for the project, which has been included in the district council's five year plan.
Campaigners for the park believe it should be built next to the children's play area on Abbey Park, which is owned by Wychavon.
The site is also favoured by Pershore Skate Club, which was set up to push forward plans and raise funds for the project.
However, some town councillors now say that the idea should go back to the drawing board and a better site found.
Speaking at last Thursday's meeting of the town council, Ray Steadman said: "I think it would spoil Abbey Park immeasurably but it would be entirely appropriate down by the Leisure Centre."
Mayoress Val Wood, who has championed the skatepark campaign, said she had considered the site near the river but ruled it out.
"The town council owns King George's Fields so would they be prepared to insure the facility and carry the cost of maintaining it?"
Councillor Dave Shaw said building the facility on Abbey Park was a matter of principle.
"Abbey Park belongs to everybody," he said.
Councillor John Grantham suggested the matter should be put on the agenda for next meeting because a an agreement was needed urgently.
He said: "This town council has got to get its act together. We need to speak with one voice."
Matt Witts, chairman of Pershore Skate Club committee, said there needed to be a sense of urgency.
He said: "Until a site is found in the centre of town the kids will keep skating in the car park and around St Andrews."
