GIBRALTAR in the summer of 1982 is the setting for a new play by Gregory Burke - The Straits - at Birmingham Repertory Theatre's The Door from next Wednesday.
Following his hit debut play Gagarin Way, Gregory Burke has drawn on his experiences growing up in a family stationed in Gibraltar during the Falklands War for his second.
Directed by John Tiffany, the play concerns Doink, Jock, Darren and Tracy, teenage children of British forces played by Calum Callaghan, James Marchant, Stephen Wight and Jenny Platt.
They had been looking forward to a long, enjoyable summer at Rosia Bay but, as a theatre spokesman explains: "A war beginning in the South Atlantic brings a dark heart to their world. The play describes an extraordinary summer in the lives of four teenagers caught up in the brutal realities of an adult world, spun with Gregory Burke's unique brand of unflinching honesty and tragic humour."
It runs from May 12-15.
Tickets are £9.75 with concessions available on 0121 236 4455 or online at
