VISUALLY impaired people from Wyre Forest are having to wait up to 18 months for crucial home help because of a shortage of volunteers, charity workers have said.
The Worcestershire Association for the Blind is "desperate" for volunteers to assist blind or partially sight people and has urged helpers to come forward.
The scheme co-ordinator, Helen Garfield, said: "I have especially long waiting lists in Kidderminster, Stourport and surrounding areas. Some visually impaired people in the Kidderminster area have been waiting more than 18 months for a volunteer.
"Those that are fortunate enough to have a volunteer tell us that it makes a huge difference to their lives, helping them stay independent and giving them something to look forward to."
Mrs Garfield said the volunteer would help by reading out letters or a newspaper or taking them out for a walk or shopping trip.
She said: "This can provide something to really look forward to. Many clients say that the most important thing that a volunteer gives them is time to listen and to chat."
"Most volunteers give an hour or so once a week and often become good friends with the person they visit. Out-of-pocket expenses are paid and full training is given."
