JUDO: Kelly Edwards emerged triumphant from the London Junior Open with a gold and silver for Kidderminster's Samurai club.
The 13-year-old sailed into the final of the U-36kg weight group and then held for maximum points after effortlessly turning the opponent onto her back.
Still looking for more action after her gold, Edwards was allowed into the U-40kg section and won a further three contests comfortably.
But in the final she met a strong London player whose physical strength eventually told on the ground in a close contest.
Edwards was pleased with her silver though, while Samurai club-mates also went on the medal trail.
Danny Williams, Ben Newbury and Ryan Pitcock all won early contests in the same weight category.
Williams went out to a superb throw and groundwork follow-up in the quarter-finals with Pitcock and Newbury both losing out in the semis.
Newbury was then beaten by Williams to the one bronze and Pitcock failed to secure the other third-place award.
Kate Walker, busy recently with British squads rather than entering events, experimented by moving up a weight group to U-57kg.
Walker faced the British number two, controlling the match to win by one high and two lower scores.
She went on to defeat another British squad player and a good London opponent before a single mistake cost her in the semi-finals.
However, Walker came back to win the bronze easily and was joined in the competition by her in-form brother Tom.
T Walker beat the current British champion and another top national squad player but lost by the narrowest of scores to another international in the semis.
In the battle for Bronze, he met the British champion again but the result was narrowly reversed, leaving him in fifth but happy with his display.
Benjy Connor started with two spectacular wins before losing in the semi-final and taking a bronze.
And Amber Gaughan added another bronze to the Samurai tally after good work in the girls' lightweights section.
Meanwhile, Karl Gaughan moved up a weight category at the British Schools Championships in Worthing, Sussex.
K Gaughan, slightly over the U-50kg limit, won his first two contests well but was eliminated in his third.
The Midlands teams for the British Team Championships next month will include a string of Samurai stars.
The boys will include Wesley Connor and T Walker with B Connor as reserve with Edwards, Kerrie Pitcock and K Walker in the girls' side.
K Pitcock has also been selected for the senior ladies with K Walker chosen as a reserve.
Anyone interested in judo or the Samurai club can call Tina Gaughan on 01905 452562.
