Ned Williams was the guest speaker on April 21, with a "behind the scenes" insight into the last 100 years or so of cinematics.
In 1896 the cinema was houses in a showman's travelling van and was a health hazard, with highly inflammable and combustible materials used in the projection of silent movies. Cinema-goers sometimes were killed in the rush to evacuate buildings when fires broke out.
Mr Williams illustrated his talk with slides showing the different types of cinemas through the years, from silent to "talkies", which includes church buildings and chapels, although from the 1920s specific buildings were commissioned. Now many old cinemas have been converted into bingo halls, or just closed.
Members are asked to provide cakes and scones for Broome Fayre on June 26.
The next meeting is at 7.30pm on May 19 at Broome parish rooms with a discussion the resolutions, and a quiz organised by D Goswell.
