THE top two sides in division two of the Brewin Dolphin Securities sponsored Malvern Table Tennis League both ended the season with comfortable victories.
The champions Manor Park Juniors ended the season as the only unbeaten team, following their victory over Crackpots E. Eight of the ten games were decided in straight sets. David Smith confirmed his status as the number one player in the division with three wins. He has lost just two of his 54 games this season.
He was once again well supported by Jack Higgs and Ben Salisbury with three and two wins respectively.
For Crackpots, Colin Dolding won once plus the doubles with James Palmer. The game of the night saw Jack come from two sets down to beat Colin 12-10 in the fifth.
Divisional runners up Manor Park Pumas scored maximum points in their game against Ledbury Exhaust. Dave Hallam and Jon Dyke each won three plus the doubles and Dave Steen won two.
Stewart Moss was the only member of the home team to taste success but both he and Ray Cooke were unlucky to lose tight five set battles with Jon.
Ledbury's match with Broadheath was one of the tightest of the season with five games (including the first three of the evening) requiring a fifth set. Stewart Moss was the star of the show with three wins and was backed up by a win apiece for Ray Cooke and John Meredith.
For the visitors Dave Elliott and Brett Brining each won two plus the doubles.
Broadheath went one better when they visited CSSC Trojans, although Trojans will consider themselves unlucky to loose, as all three of the games, which went to five sets, were won by the visitors.
The match result was still in doubt going into the final game of the night between Dave Backhurst and Brett Brining. Brett came from 2-1 behind to win 11-8, 9-11, 14-16, 11-8 and clinch victory for his team.
For Trojans Dave won one as did Kevin Howard and Ian Backhurst won two. Brett won all three for Belters and partnered John Stalker (two) to doubles victory over the Backhursts.
Trojans fared no better in their match with Bromyard Logics, a result which confirmed Bromyard would not be relegated. Richard Owens and Chris Daniels were both undefeated winning all their singles and the doubles.
Dave Backhurst, Kevin Howard and Geoff Davies each won once. They all beat Derek Craddock who will consider himself very unlucky not to pick up at least one win, as all his games went to five sets.
The final relegation spot was still undecided going into the last match of the season between Ledbury Exhaust and CSSC Trojans.
A win for Trojans would see Crackpots E relegated, any other result would send Trojans down.
Ledbury started well with Tony Williams and Stewart Moss beating Kevin Howard and Dave Backhurst respectively. Ian Backhurst pulled one back for Trojans by beating Ray Cooke.
The fourth game was a pivotal moment in the match. Stewart took the first two sets off Kevin before some powerful hitting from Kevin earned him the next two. In the deciding set Stewart appeared to step up a gear and his tricky spin play proved too strong for Kevin putting Ledbury 3-1 up. This scoreline soon became 4-1.
A win for Dave and then another in the doubles for Ian and Kevin gave Trojans renewed hope but that was to be their last success of the evening. Stewart and Tony both ended the night with three wins out of three, although Tony had to come from two sets down to beat Dave and achieve his first maximum of the season.
RESULTS: Manor Park Juniors 8, Crackpots E 2; Ledbury Exhaust 5, Broadheath Belters 5; Ledbury Exhaust 1, Manor Park Pumas 9; Bromyard Logics 7, CSSC Trojans 3; CSSC Trojans 4, Broadheath Belters 6; Ledbury Exhaust 7, CSSC Trojans 3.
