A man has undergone surgery to repair a broken jaw after he was attacked in Kidderminster.
The incident occurred in an alleyway behind the Wyre Forest Glades Leisure Centre at around 10pm on Friday.
The 22-year-old victim was returning home when he was confronted by a group of four or five men.
After an exchange of words he was assaulted by a man described as a well-built, white male, in his mid-to-late teens, around 5ft 9in tall with ginger hair.
The group were disturbed by a man who came to the assistance of the victim, who was taken to the Worcestershire Royal Hospital.
Det Con Alan Roberts said: "There will have been a number of people around at that time of night so close to the town centre and I would like to hear from anyone who was either there or who recognises the description of the offender.
"They can contact me at Kidderminster CID on 08457 444 888.
"Anyone who has information who does not want to give their name to the police can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
