MAJOR improvement works to gas mains throughout Hereford's High Town will pave the way for a big clean-up of the city's shopping area.
Between now and November, Transco will be replacing the existing gas mains - starting in Commercial Street and ending in Victoria Street.
The council is also using the period of works as an opportunity to give the city a makeover, making it a much brighter place to shop.
Following each phase of Transco's city centre work, the council will send in contractors to wash down the whole area.
Chewing gum
The council is also planning to blitz chewing gum blighting the city's streets and re-plant its flower beds following its popular May Fair.
"We've been working very closely with Transco and the Hereford City Partnership Retail Group and are keen to use this opportunity to leave the city in better shape," said the council's head of engineering and transportation, Stephen Oates.
"This work goes hand in hand with other projects to give the city a fresh look."
Other recent clean-up projects include the facelift for the city's Black and White House and a graffiti hotline.
