AFTER the meeting on April 15, members agreed this was one of the most entertaining speakers we have ever had.
George Hook said he was the managing director of the Midland's (and possibly England's) largest pearl button manufacturer.
It became apparent he was, in fact, the only person in the Midlands making pearl buttons.
He brought in samples of the original pearl shells, some of them so large members could hardly lift them.
His final display of pearl jewellery was very popular and members will be sporting pearl brooches, rings and bracelets for many years to come.
This was the last speaker of the winter programme.
The summer programme begins when members go to Hadrian's Wall and Newcastle at the weekend.
There will have a guided tour of Bede's World Visitor Centre, a visit to the Roman fort of Arbeia and other forts along the wall.
New members welcome. For more details, call 541317.
