MEMBERS of Vale Triffid super raft team took part in what is thought to be the final 100-mile River Wye Raft Race.
For the first time in the last ten years, the team consisted of ten men - Andy Rattue, Gary Pickering, Steve Cooper, Jeff Rignall, Graeme Adkin, Rob Hall, Adrian Burrows, Jason Fojtik, Colin Richman.
The first day of the race from Hay-on-Wye to Hereford was raced in extremely shallow water that caused considerable damage to the raft that completed the course in a time of five hours 17 minutes and 19 seconds in cool wet conditions.
The second day's racing from Hereford to Huntsham took place in better conditions with the river gaining in depth from the well-risen river Lugg bringing the team home in a time of 6.21.44, and a place better than the previous day.
The third day saw an early start from Huntsham to catch the tide with the river still running high in the showery weather.
The team crossed the finishing line at Chepstow in a time of 3.54.28 to gain 11th position in an overall time of 15.33.31. They also won the Worcestershire Trophy, awarded to the fastest team from the county.
The team continues to train for a full programme of races throughout the year and anyone interested in joining should contact Maggie on 07901 505907.
