I NOTICE from the Evening News that the Government is pumping in a huge amount of money into our county for rural travel initiatives.
I wonder how much of this money is going to find its way into the coffers of the First Bus Company for very little to show for it.
Our bus services are being cut back more and more. It seems that, where the county council gives the bus companies a subsidy we see buses running empty.
Here in Drakes Broughton we have empty buses running through the village all evening up till about 11pm and yet very few buses through the village during the day when people want them.
Re-routing
The classic is a re-routing of one of the buses that runs through the village from Worcester Bus Station which now routes through Spetchley.
I am assured that there is not a bus stop between Worcester and Drakes Broughton on this route. Why not route the bus to where there are bus stops? People may be then persuaded to use them.
Neither the Government nor the local councils engage in joined-up thinking when it comes to transport policy.
On one hand, they are trying to get us out of our cars, and on the other hand they are cutting the buses. What a way to run a country.
TERRY JAMES,
Drakes Broughton,
Worcester.
