A FESTIVAL that started as a bet nearly 30 years ago is set to be even bigger than in previous years.
The Evesham Angling Festival is one of the biggest events in the fishing calendar and this year it is set to include trade stands, a craft fair, a plants and produce sale, a fun fair, a beer tent, afternoon teas, strawberries and ice cream and live entertainment.
The 2004 festival, which is due to take place from Saturday, August 28 to Monday, August 30, was due to be launched today at a special lunch hosted by Angela Tidmarsh, tourism officer with Wychavon District Council.
"The start of what is now known as 'The Evesham Angling Festival' began in 1975 when the first match was held," she said.
"It was originally organised on behalf of a Mr Lawden of Ladbrokes who wanted to prove, for a bet, angling could be a 'spectacle sport'.
This year £25,000 of prize money will be competed for over three days.
