ARCHERS actress Alison Dowling will officially start the Hearts First Worcester Bike Ride in aid of the British Heart Foundation.

Ms Dowling - who plays Elizabeth Pargetter - is familiar with the problems of living with heart disease, as her character in Radio Four's long-running drama has a congenital heart defect and had a valve replacement operation after the birth of her twins.

She wants to encourage more people to get on their bikes to fight heart disease.

"I'm a keen supporter of the British Heart Foundation's work, not only in treating and caring for those living with heart problems, but in educating younger generations to take care of their own hearts," she said.

"That's why I'm encouraging people to take part in the Worcester Bike Ride. Put hearts first, your own and others, by signing up to the challenge and raising funds to help the BHF continue its amazing work."

The Bike Ride will start and finish at Worcester Rugby Club on Sunday, June 6. Sponsored cyclists can choose 10 or 20-mile routes through country lanes, taking in Droitwich Spa and two recently opened sections of the Sustrans National Cycle Network.

Entry costs £10 for adults or £15 on the day and £5 or £10 on the day for under 16s. For details call 0800 169 3672 or em-ail region8@bhf.

Julie Neal, BHF-funded matron at Worcestershire Royal Hospital, said the funds raised by the bike ride would be put to good use.

"The practical and emotional support the BHF gives to heart patients and their families provides a lifeline," she said.
