THE Worcestershire Golf Club Sunday Cup competition attracted its usual large field of golfers and competition was very keen amongst the players.
In Division One, the first six players all returned to the clubhouse with net medal scores well below par for the course.
The two leading players returned a net score of 68 but Jamie Dunster had faltered slightly on the back nine allowing Andy Price to take first spot.
Junior golfer Steven Lane was one of three players to return a net score of 69, the other two being Carl Bayliss and Matt Pugh. After long deliberation by the competition committee, Matt Pugh was placed third, Steven Lane fourth and Carl Bayliss fifth.
Scores in Division Two were not as low as those in the higher Division. Chris Jolley came third with a score of 71. Two players returned scores of 70, but on the count-back system the ever-improving John Wynn was placed second and Ian Anderson first.
The scores however in Division Three were the best of the day. Mike Smith came third in this Division with a net 69.
James Wilde was second with a net 67. The winner of Division Three turned out to be Nick Kay. Nick was in superb form to return a net 65; the best score of the day that not only won Division Three, but also the coveted Sunday Cup.
Some 50 lady golfers competed in the 18 hole Stableford, Combined Queen Mother's Cup.
Norma Pottinger, recently returned from a long period of enforced inactivity, competed with great resolve to return a score of 35 points, the same score as lady club champion Cathy Harris and former lady captain June Jones.
On the count-back system Norma was placed fifth, Cathy fourth and June third. Two ladies, Cath Francis and Liz Lewis, both returned scores of 37 points. After the usual post competition deliberations, the committee placed Liz Lewis second and Cath Francis, who plays off a handicap of eight, first. Cath wins the Queen Mother's Cup.
In the Mixed Bader Cup qualifying stableford competition, youngsters Joanne Yorke and Jamie Dunster were the winners scoring a very creditable 40 points.
Janet and Larry Long came second with 39 and Andy Greene and April Wilding came third.
With the advent of spring, team matches are now well to the fore. The A team, led by Simon Tinkler, was in great form to win their league home game against Kidderminster by five and a half matches to a half.
In the mixed match played away at Droitwich, The Worcestershire ran out winners by seven matches to five.
A disappointing result was recorded by the seniors' team who lost their away fixture at Ross by five matches to three.
