THE Malvern Angels travelled to Eccleshall on Sunday to play Eccleshall Women's RFC in their last game of the season.

Eccleshall fielded a team which had a very similar amount of experience, so this match promised to be a good game to finish the season with.

The game kicked off with good encouragement from quite a large crowd. It took a good five minutes into the game for either team to find a crack in the defences, then Malvern managed to work Eccleshall back towards their own line and a quick break saw the first points on the board for Malvern.

Straight after the kick off, Lorraine Madsen punished a sloppy Eccleshall defence and ran in a try from the half way line. Eccleshall struck back and they put down an admirable team try to make the score 10-5.

Disaster struck for the Malvern scrum half, Sam Jones, when an old tendon injury came back, but rather than go off, she moved herself to the wing and this enabled the team captain, Debbie Danby to move up to scrum half. This proved an inspired move as it allowed enough time for Jones' leg to recover and in the second half she put down her first try of the season in a sprint from the 22m line.

Debbie Danby also played one of her best games for the Angels to date. As captain, she inspired the newer players and as a player proved her adaptability when she moved from fly half to scrum half. Lorraine Madsen also proved that she will make the most of any position on the field,.

She was playing well out of position, playing at second row, and still managed to run in most of the tries for the game, which took the final score along to 49-5.

Angels' coach Barry Kirby was very pleased with the result.

Kirby said: "Eccleshall was probably our most realistic challenge, a team that is within our standards, and the ladies really showed how much they have advanced over the season, especially in the areas of fitness and their rucking and mauling which proved to be the crucial part of setting up the trys within this game.

"The team had really worked at their communication and being able to put the phases together."

That was the last game in the clubs calendar, the summer holds some 10's tournaments and a 7's tour, just to end the season off with some fun.

The team is now looking forward to summer training and preparing for the next season.
