THE Cross Keys Golf Society team is just one match away from a dream trip to Portugal.
The team, consisting of Dave Harding, Dave Farrell, Tim Cain and Barry Schofield, have reached the national finals of the Coors Golfing Pub of the Year championship to be played at the prestigious Staverton Park Hall course at Daventry in early June.
A top six finish there would see them qualify for the grand final at the Pines Course, Vilamoura, Portugal in September.
The team scraped through their local event at Boughton Park, Worcester and went on to meet the cream of the Midlands at Fulford Heath, Kings Norton.
Forty teams of four had qualified for the event and had to battle through torrential rain, leading to water-sodden greens, in the hope of reaching the national finals but the Keys team played magnificently to finish second.
Dave Harding (4-handicapper) scored 36 points, Dave Farrell (8) matched him with 36 points, Tim Cain (14) was close behind with 34 points, and Barry Schofield (12), the Worcestershire Golf Club vice-captain scored 28 points.
The team has transport and accommodation already booked for the national finals but are looking for golf ball sponsors.
Thanks go to Ann and Reg at the Cross Keys for their organisation and hospitality.
