I REFER to an irresponsible letter from Ken Nason (You Say, Wednesday, May 5).

Of course identity cards are a negation of freedom and, in better times, would have constituted an unnecessary imposition on citizens. Alas, we do not live in normal times.

Many people, especially the elderly, are afraid to be on the streets after about 6pm, for fear of being violently assaulted, or even murdered, by criminals operating, either for material gain or, maybe, merely to obtain sadistic glee by inflicting maximum misery on others. Come to that, people are far from safe in their own homes.

Criminals and terrorists constitute an immeasurably greater interference with democratic freedom than is posed by the suggested compulsory carrying of ID cards by citizens.

Such ID cards should alleviate the situation, to some extent, anyway.
