COUNCILLORS in Worcester last night "blew their own trumpets" as they gave the go-ahead for an ambitious project which could turn an historical Civil War site into a worldwide attraction.
City council cabinet members were delighted to be able to give orders to go-ahead with the work at the Commandery and Fort Royal Park.
The Heritage Lottery Fund donated £1m to the projects, which will see the restoration of the site, which served as the Royalists' headquarters during the Battle of Worcester in 1651.
"This is a case of us being able to blow our trumpets," said Coun Francis Lankester.
"This will bring the Commandery up to date and I think it will make it one of the biggest regional attractions in the UK."
The project includes expanding the centre, landscaping the gardens and building better disabled-friendly facilities.
