A JEALOUS disc jockey broke a man's cheekbone after watching him dance with his former girlfriend, a jury was told.
Mark Franklin followed Ian Hall from the Ambassador club in Evesham and headbutted him in the face, it was alleged.
Franklin admitted to police he was jealous and "a bit miffed" at seeing Mr Hall "dirty dancing" with Kelly White in the club, said prosecutor Pardeep Tiwana.
But he claimed he felt cornered by Mr Hall and one of his friends and acted in self-defence because he feared he was going to be hit.
Franklin, aged 40, of Tilesford Park, Pershore, denies inflicting grievous bodily harm.
Mr Tiwana told Worcester Crown Court: "Mr Hall had not laid a finger on the defendant. He chose to deliver a blow, using his head as a weapon."
The jury heard that Mr Hall, Miss White and two other friends went to the club in Avon Street on the night of Friday, July 18 last year.
Franklin, who was on duty as a DJ at the club, told police his relationship with 18-year-old Miss White was over.
But Mr Tiwana claimed the defendant still had feelings for her and became "very angry" over her dancing with another man.
The group left around 1am but were confronted by Franklin across the street. He accused Mr Hall of dancing with Miss White "as if she was his missus", the jury heard.
Mr Tiwana said the men began shouting at each other before Franklin landed the blow which felled Mr Hall, who needed surgery on his cheekbone and also suffered bleeding in his right eye.
Giving evidence, Mr Hall, who lives in Evesham, said Franklin was aggressive and moody at the club.
He witnessed Franklin and Miss White arguing outside and tried to calm the situation down.
"He grabbed me by the scruff of the neck and ripped my T-shirt in the process," he said.
"I said I didn't want to fight and had my hands in my pockets. It was an extremely hard blow which left me on the floor in agony."
The trial continues.
