ROWING: There were two double victories for Bewdley at Shrewsbury Regatta over the weekend.
The open senior four coxed four of Andy Jarvis, Alex Holden-Smith, Graham Glen and Tom NcNeil were successful on Saturday's 1,000 metre course.
And then, on Sunday's 600m set-up, cox Sian Thompson again guided the four men to victory, this time in the higher senior three section.
They took the final over Guildford after triumphing in a first-round battle with another Bewdley crew.
Richard Jackson also chalked up wins on both days in the open senior four single sculls and the junior 18.
The teenager beat a Runcorn rower on Sunday in a re-row by one-and-a-half lengths following a dead heat in the first race.
Jarvis, Holden-Smith, Glen, McNeil and Jackson, all 17, will be heading to the National Schools Championships in Nottingham on Saturday, May 30.
Club coach Mick Edmonds said: "It was hoped they would get a victory at the weekend but two wins was beyond expectations. They have raised their game."
Also on Sunday, Emma Hinton and Jenny Merchant tasted success in the women's senior three double sculls but also needed a re-row after a collision on the finish line.
Saturday's action saw a three-length victory for Bewdley's open veteran D eight of Paul Warnett, Colin Loveday, John Price, Edmonds, John Fazakerley, Jem Rodgers, Bruce Bosworth and Simon Perkins, coxed by Thompson.
Jo Atkinson, Maggie Jameson, Teresa Roberts and Liz Killick, coxed by Lindsey Salmon, easily defeated Grosvenor in the women's veteran B coxed four.
And Derby were defeated by Bewdley's open senior one coxless pairs crew of Peter Jarvis and Alastair Jones.
Edmonds added: "The crews put in a lot of hard training over the winter and they reaped the rewards in the first race of the season."
The next major regatta for the rowers is likely to be at Bridgnorth in early June.
