HEALTH officials in Worcestershire have welcomed Government moves to make cholesterol-lowering drugs available over the counter at pharmacies.
Claire Simmons, regional director for the national charity the British Heart Foundation in Worcestershire, said the move could potentially save county residents' lives.
"We welcome the proposal to make cholesterol-lowering drugs, statins, available over the counter through pharmacies," she said.
"The evidence is that in people at risk of heart attack and stroke, taking 10mg of Simvastatin each night can reduce their risk by about 27 per cent.
"However, in order to ensure that these drugs reach the right people, patients should be encouraged to accept the offer of reliable cholesterol checks as well as taking appropriate lifestyle measures.
"These include stopping smoking, controlling their weight, eating a balanced diet and taking more exercise."
