MORE than 500 Vale residents have signed a petition protesting against plans to demolish Evesham's Ambassador Snooker Club.
The massive response to the campaign impressed organisers who only began canvassing signatures last week. The future of the 2,000 strong club is in doubt because the company that owns the Avon Street site, West Midlands Leasing Ltd plans to develop an adjacent warehouse and needs the land for parking.
Campaign co-ordinator Irene Heath said: "I think the campaign is going really well and I just hope that the petition will make a difference. We all really want the club to continue and I will do the best I can to make sure it happens."
Evesham town councillors have voted against the planning application on the grounds that the plans would result in a lack of an amenity to the town.
But it remains undecided whether the matter will be brought to Wychavon District Council's development control committee for discussion, or just waived through by planning officers.
Local member Jo Sandalls said: "Whether the club closes or does not close is not a planning matter, but it is certainly something to discuss."
Copies of the petition are available to sign at Birdseye sports shop, the Red Horse and Royal Oak pubs on Vine Street and Tower Trophies in Merstow Green. For more information about the campaign contact Irene Heath on 01386 761626.
