Cupid seems to have been working overtime lately among some of the more mature residents on the west side of West Malvern Road this spring.
Last weekend there was a lively party in the village hall to celebrate the marriage of long-time partners Di Shindler and Gerry Hurfurt at no 94. Just up the road at no 100, Garden & Nature Club chairman Lionel Butcher modestly let slip in the club newsletter that he had prevailed on his companion and ace jam-maker Barbara Meddows to marry him.
Earlier this year, one-time childhood sweethearts Jim Payne and Bobbin Martin at no 176 were married in the romantic setting of a tiny chapel on Lake Tekapo in the South Island of New Zealand. The matrimonial bug seems to have reached as far up as the Brewers' Arms. where mine host and hostess George Hilliard and Vanessa Gossage arrived back from a holiday in South Africa with Vanessa sporting an engagement ring. The infection has not yet, as far as we know, crossed to the east side of West Malvern Road - we must wait and see.
