MALVERN Town Wanderers U11s completed a league and cup double in their final match of the season with a thrilling 3-0 win over local rivals and championship challengers Newtown Sports.
When Wanderers lost in their home league fixture to Newtown in November the likelihood of winning the league looked lost.
In the cup, Wanderers defeated Newtown Colts 3-1 in a replay and followed this with a 4-0 semi-final win over Severn City to book their place in the cup final for the third successive season.
The final was always going to be a close match against table-topping Newtown Juniors and after a goalless first half, Wanderers went behind 1-0.
Led by captain Scott Rogers Wanderers laid siege to the Newtown goal and grabbed an equaliser from star striker Harry Gregory. A sensational long-range effort from Chris Watling almost stole the show and the trophy minutes before the end.
Malvern were made to wait for their victory by way of extra-time and a penalty shoot-out, which went all the way to sudden death.
Jordan Johnson put all the pressure on Newtown with an inch-perfect spot kick and keeper Tom Dunn saved the final kick to give Wanderers their third cup in three seasons.
Wanderers knew that they needed to win all three of their remaining league games to take the title and Oldbury Park Tigers and Worcester Rangers were duly defeated, leaving them sitting on top of the table for the first time.
This left the championship decider at Newtown and, just like in the cup final, the first half was even and goalless.
The second half produced 25 minutes of attacking football from Wanderers and a hat-trick from Harry Gregory secured the league title and the double.
