BROADHEATH-based Plough Inn AC's newly acquired pool at Wichenford looks set to break records in the near future if the club's latest contest results are anything to go by.

Club member Rob Orr put together a fantastic bag of mirror carp in the two to six pound bracket to win their first encounter of the new season on the venue.

Drawn on peg two, Orr offered his meat and corn baits hard on the lake bed at seven metres to take fish throughout the day, finishing with an excellent winning weight of 79-8-0.

Second placed man Rob Melton took a similar catch to the winner but his fish came from mid water on peg 14. Once again meat and corn were the successful baits used by Melton who recorded creditable figures of 68-13-0.

Third-placed Dave Wagg used old fashioned bread bait at just three metres to weigh 48-10-0 while way behind in fourth place came Mike Hope with just seven pounds.

The club are now taking bookings for their pool with most Saturday dates available along with a few Sundays for this season. Club secretaries interested should contact Mike Hope on 07764921170 for details.

n Swan AC held an open contest on the middle pool at Hawbridge fishery where local star Mark Newman completed a hat-trick of victories on successive contests -- two WDUAA opens.

He took pole position on the Swan match thanks to seven carp weighing a level 28 pounds which all fell, along with a few chub and perch, to waggler fished maggot bait.

Runner-up Graham Goodyear used pole tackle on his way to recording 17-4-0 but unfortunately the Portobello angler lost too many fish to secure first place.

Sue Jacques took third spot with four carp and a few small fish going 16-10-0, while fourth place went to Worcester ace Terry Cook with a barbel and bream totalling 16-4-0.

n Barbourne AC had a cracking match on their club pool at Cotheridge last weekend when less than four pounds separated the top placed anglers. Seasoned campaigner Pete Hughes took the individual honours thanks to an all carp haul of 45-4-0 which came to meat and corn, offered on the deck and included fish to six pounds.

Runner up was John Starkey with 43-1-0 taken on the waggler beating former 'King of Tons' champion Craig Davies whose 41-13-0 took third place. Meanwhile Paul Davis secured fourth when he recorded a weight of 41-5-0.

n Worcester Match Group romped to an easy victory when the side took first place on last weekend's penultimate round of the Alans Tackle Spring League at Brockamin.

First individual making a rare appearance was John Snelson with a pole and feeder caught 63-0-0. The WMG angler made good use of shallow peg 42 to take around eight good carp.

Coming second on successive contest was a team mate of the winner Mark Walker who found last week's winning peg 24 to his liking when he weighed in a method feeder caught carp weight of 59-8-0.

Last round winner Chris Senter (Alans) had to settle this time for third place by netting 57-15-0 mostly in the last hour on floating biscuit when the fish turned on in his peg 34.

Section winners were (A) Andy Maybury 29-11-0, (B) Nic Archer 42-3-0, (C) Tim Nokes 14-4-0 and (D) Nigel Gladwin 16-4-0.

The league, with one round remaining, now sees WMG take the lead with 49 points followed by BroadAcres with 46. Alans Tackle are now third on 37 with Wet Nets fourth on 35.

The final contest in the series takes place this Sunday on the Bottom pool at Brockamin.

Prospects: The local canal bream shoals have now reached their spawning grounds and apart from a few isolated areas anglers should once again rely on roach and perch.

Stillwaters continue to offer the best sport with carp to double figures.
