SCORING in The Worcestershire Golf Club's spring meeting medal competition was exceptional.
In Division One, where members compete for the Easter Challenge Prize, the first five players all returned scores better than par. The first three players all returned scores of 69 and could only be separated by the organizing committee. The winner was Dave Harding, second was Stan Jones and in third spot was Neil Smith.
In Division Two only one player returned a score below the par for the course. The winner, who also won the coveted Spencer Cup, was Dave Farley who returned a three under par score of 68.
John Houston came second with 72 and Dave Butler was third with 73.
Players in Division Three were in excellent form with the first three players all returning below par figures.
The winner of the division, with the best score of the day, a 66, was Roy Cale. Roy also wins the Horton Cup, named after the famous county cricketer, who lived in Colwall.
Fred Payne came second with a 67, the same score as Barry Thompson who was placed third on the count back system.
In the day long game the club's A team took on the prestigious Oxford & Cambridge Golf Society. After the morning foursomes the club trailed by four matches to three. At lunch the club captain, Ron Richardson, made a tactical substitution, replacing himself with 'Storming' Norman Bolton.
The shrewd substitution worked well. Norman was in excellent form enabling the club's team to reverse the morning score so that the match ended as a very creditable draw.
The mid-week Stableford competition was played in atrocious weather conditions and the scores returned reflected the difficulty the elements caused.
At times putting took place, on the greens, through pools of water. Two local general practitioners fought a close battle to be placed second and third. Ian Macleod came second with 31 points and Andrew Meredith third with 29 points.
Taking into account the difficult weather conditions Chris Massey returned a very creditable 35 points to win the competition.
In the difficult Tankard Foursomes Competition, where players play against the par of each hole, four pairs returned identical scores of two down.
These four pairs could only be separated on the count back system. Andrew and Gerald Bird were declared the winners having the best back nine hole score. Two youngsters, John Wynn and Jamie Dunster performed exceptionally well to obtain second place, Paul Yorke and Julian Bouchet were placed third and in fourth place were Dave Farrell and Dave Turner.
In the recently introduced Veterans' Stableford Competition, played over a shortened measured 'yellow course', the first four players all returned scores of par or better.
Brian Vincent was placed fourth with a score of 36 points. Mike Tubb came third with 37 points and Garnet Scott was second with 38 points.
The winner, for the second time this season of the Veterans' Competition was the ever consistent Geoff Jones who returned a score of 40 points.
Following their initial defeat of the season, the club's B team, captained by Barry Schofield, returned to winning ways in their game against Kidderminster. The B team won by 3 matches to 2 .
The seniors halved their match against Worcester Golf & Country Club scoring three matches each.
