THE first national sprint triathlon to be held in Redditch has been hailed a great success after more than 300 competitors from across the country took part.
Organisers are now keen to see the event, which included a 750m swim, a 20k cycle ride and a 5k run, take place around Arrow Valley Park every year.
Organiser Andrew Cunnell, of Redditch Triathlon Club, said: "The athletes really enjoyed the sunny weather and the challenging course in Redditch.
"The water of Arrow Valley Lake proved a big hit and those taking part said it was a wonderful lake to swim in.
"Competitors really enjoyed the cycle route because it was challenging, with several hills, and they liked running round the traffic-free paths of the park."
Mr Cunnell said they had learnt a lot from the event, which was organised in conjunction with Redditch Council, and next year he hoped it would be bigger and better.
Council cultural development manager Chris Hill said: "It was really good to see a national event being held in Redditch and to see what a great place the park is for sporting activities."
First in the triathlon was Gavin Smith, second was Daniel Plews , with Philip Mosley third.
First woman to finish was Abigail Bayley, second Victoria Freeman and Stephanie Maclean third.
A charity fun run and 10k race were held after the triathlon.
The race, which took runners around the park, was won by Richard Malin in 33mins 11 sec, second was Ian Keyte in 36:20 and third was David Henderson in 36:22.
First woman home was Katie O'Byrne in 40:38, second was Alison Blower in 41:41 and third was Jeanette Malin in 42:15.
