CYCLING: On-song cyclist Steve Burns powered to his second victory of the season in as many weeks.

The Wyre Forest Cycle Racing Club rider beat a quality field to win the VTTA 10-mile time trial at Fosseway, Leamington, on Saturday.

On a perfect day with light winds assisting the riders, Burns turned in a season's best time of 21 minutes 29 seconds to continue his dream start to the campaign.

Ian Smith's hopes of improving on his third place in Newport were dashed by a stomach bug which forced him to withdraw.

But veteran Mike Nicol rode superbly to finish in 27-39, his best 10-mile time for more than 10 years.

Joe Rowe continued his superb form in the LVRC Frank Tidmarsh Memorial Road Race at Bridgnorth on Sunday.

On a tough 48-mile hilly circuit, which included the hard climb of Angel Bank, Clee Hill, Rowe broke away with two other riders.

The trio managed to stay away until they approached the uphill sprint finish when Rowe put his track racing skills to good use.

He sprinted around his fellow breakaway companions at the last minute to win the category C race in fine style.

Rowe was fourth overall with ex-world medallist and Milk Race winner Les West taking first place.

Dave Wood rode strongly in only his second road race of the season, only dropping off the pace at the top of the climb but finishing well for a top-20 place.

Club veterans Bill Picton and Mick Gray both gained their age standard medals in the VTTA 30-mile Time Trial National Championships in North Yorkshire.

The Wyre Forest pair were rewarded for their long trip with perfect warm conditions as Picton finished in an excellent one hour 19-03 and Gray in 1-25-29.

Rob Cole rode to a season's best 1-00-30 in the South Pennine RC 25 mile Time Trial at Etwall, Derbyshire.

Cole's ride was an improvement by more than a minute over last week's ride on the same course in the CDLCA event.

In the Tuesday evening club time trial series, Chris Morris raced to his third victory of the competition.

Morris stormed around the 14-mile undulating Astley circuit in an excellent 33-24, while Wood rode strongly to finish in 36-12 and pip Jon Howard by a second.

Other times: John Parker 37-11, Rowe 37-19, Neil France 37-43, James Smith 38-15, Gary Bertram 39-15, Richard Pedersen 39-25, Brian Clarke 41-08, John Higgins 43-33, Nicol 44-06, Gray 45-05, Steve Clews 45-18.
