POLICE trying to control the number of illegal raves and gatherings in the area have asked for the public's help in preventing them.

West Mercia Police officers have already intervened in four illegal raves in Herefordshire and north Shropshire this year and provided information on another 12 events to other police forces in the country.

They now want members of the public who hear about planned raves to contact them so they can put a stop to them before they happen.

Evesham Inspector Steve Brooker said: "Illegal raves and gatherings can cause misery and disruption to local residents and if not properly organised, can present a danger to those attending.

"Landowners are sometimes approached by organisers for permission to use their fields but should be aware of the consequences of allowing illegal events to take place. We would ask responsible landowners who decline these approaches to call us on 08457 444 888. Anyone with information about planned illegal raves can call us, anonymously if they wish, on Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

He also warned that police would make inquiries to establish the identity of landowners and organisers of illegal events and a criminal investigation would be conducted into any offences reported.

He added that any landowner considering allowing an event on their land may see it as an easy way to make money but it could turn into a prolonged and costly exercise.
