PERSHORE Town Council has vowed to support a skatepark in the town - but members still cannot agree where it should be built.

The council is now calling on officers from Wychavon District Council to explain all the options available for the siting of the proposed facility.

The chairman of Pershore Skate Club has welcomed the support of councillors but is urging them to show practical support by contributing money from town funds to the scheme.

Val Wood, who has led the campaign for a skatepark, said that there was only one place in Pershore it could possibly be built. "If we cannot agree to have a skatepark on Abbey Park then one will not be built in Pershore. It should be next to the children's play area where there will soon be CCTV cameras installed."

The new mayor Chris Parsons said disagreements within the council had to be resolved as soon as possible. "We need to present a united front. It is not going to please everyone on the council but we need to go forward with a positive view of where we want to see it."

Former mayor Richard Hampton said that problems with skaters using inappropriate places to practice their skills would continue until a park was constructed. "We owe this to the young people of the town. They are going to be skating all over the place until we give them the right place to do it."

Matt Witts, chairman of Pershore Skate Club, said he was delighted that the council had voted to support a skatepark but added: "I believe the council must contribute something to be seen to support youth development in Pershore." He also urged councillors to consult closely with youngsters in the town at every stage of the proposed development.
