THIRTEEN Wyre Forest-based staff of West Mercia Constabulary have earned official recognition for their efforts to make the district a better place to live in.

They received commendations for actions ranging from acts of bravery to securing sentences for serious offenders from Chief Superintendent Mark Howard.

Among those honoured was PC Billy Keys, who has targeted persistent offenders in Kidderminster town centre.

During the past 21 months, he arrested more than 140 offenders, was involved in another 30 arrests and submitted more than 300 intelligence reports, all helping reassure retailers.

He was further commended for courage and tenacity in tackling crime and disorder in Kidderminster's town centre.

Beat officer, PC Bob Fearnall, was recognised for an outstanding contribution in carrying out his day-to-day duties, as well as his work on an urban safety initiative on Comberton estate. This had led to reductions in anti-social behaviour and crime.

Kidderminster-based custody officer, Helen Cooper, earned her commendation for her action in dealing with a detainee's serious, self-inflicted injury.

PC David Wood carried off the Special Constable of the Year award.

Officers from Kidderminster were among 12 involved in Operation Gangster, a three-month initiative that involved investigation and review of more than 600 offences, leading to the detection of a further 300 offences.

Chief Supt Howard said: "It's important that the public see the tremendous work that many of our officers carry out on a daily basis as part of their everyday working lives.

"I am proud that these officers are based in North Worcestershire and I firmly believe that they have made a real difference."
