AFTER the recent furore over the cash crisis, that brought the future of GP surgeries in the county into doubt, readers could not be blamed for wondering just where the priorities of some health "managers" lay?

However, the good news - and good sense - that prevailed after the Evening News took up the case and launched their successful petition was welcome.

At last someone in Westminster was knocking heads together and coming up with the policies, and the cash to support them, that meant progress could be made and the surgeries' much needed plans could come 'out of the cold'.

An epidemic of common sense had broken out.

So it is more good news today when we reveal that a new multi-million pound health centre is set to open in the city centre.

The state-of-the-art mental health hospital on City Walls Road will provide help, treatment and support for up to 300 patients every week from the city and environs.

Great news for patients who will get the quality care that they require at a city centre location.

Great news as well for the other facilities that offer this type of care - it must relieve the massive pressure on them.

This "day centre" plan is a being described as a joint venture of Worcestershire Social Services and the Worcestershire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust.

This paper is the first to congratulate those behind this joint scheme for their foresight.

Projects such as this mean that health provision in the city and county may be well on the way to recovery.

Let us hope so.
