Further to my previous letter concerning the axing of bands in the park, I feel I must explain to Coun Ian Fearnside that to merely vote in favour of Bands in the Park is not enough. Many of the previous town councillors found it really enjoyable to marshall these events. Action speaks louder than words.
In 2002, the Malvern Theatres restaurant generously provided complementary interval refreshments for the musicians. The councillors staffed the park voluntarily. The money set aside by the council paid for an officer to arrange an agency to book the bands and covered the fees charged by the individual bands to cover their expenses. This officer also managed the duty rota for the councillors.
There has never been any question of paying for marshals until Malvern Town Action Group took the reins.
The town council claim to be concerned about attracting people to Malvern. How can they countenance the curtailing of these afternoon concerts, especially this summer when the town is celebrating the music of Edward Elgar.
I repeat my question - are the present incumbents too grand to set out some chairs and to litter pick afterwards?
Frances Victory, former mayor (2003-2003), Wells Road, Malvern Wells.
