THE Chase overcame the challenge from their local rivals from Dyson Perrins CE High School to win the second challenge match for the Malvern Gazette Super 12's Trophy at Malvern Rugby Club on Saturday.
DYSON PERRINS Yr7 14pts, THE CHASE Yr7 49pts
The Chase now hold an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series, with the final match due to be played on Saturday, April 3.
Despite the score-line, the match between the two Year 7 sides was a well-contested affair and enjoyed by the large crowd of parents and schoolmates.
The Chase struck first after Dyson's lost possession in a midfield mix-up and with the ball moving fluidly along the three-quarter line, Chase centre, Dan Smith found the try-line to claim his first score of the day. Lewis Loader converting the extra points.
After two more tries and conversions from Smith and Loader respectively, Dyson's looked as if they had a mountain to climb.
However, the big Dyson's pack started to make their presence felt and as they rumbled forward, openings in The Chase defence began to appear. With referee Paul Ferguson playing advantage for offside against The Chase, Dyson's Chris James round the retreating defensive line to open Dyson's account with the conversion added by Ashley Jones.
The try inspired Dyson's into action and for the next few plays they made significant in-roads into The Chase half. However, just before halftime, Lewis Loader slipped his marker and ran three-quarters of the pitch to claim a fourth converted try for The Chase, giving his side a 28-7 lead.
Such is the level of interest of rugby at The Chase that they were able to rotate the whole of their team at half-time and this gave the Dysons the edge at the restart.
While the new Chase team were finding their feet, Dysons struck hard and only a brave last ditched tackle from Chase centre Harry Careless on Joe Wilkes, prevented the Dyson's big lock from claiming a second try for Dyson's.
Nevertheless from the ensuing scrum, The Chase bravely ran the ball from their own try-line to set Will Turner up for their fifth try, converted by Loader.
A deep kick at the restart was followed up by the Dyson's centres and good recycling from the Dyson's pack ensured that Daniel Scully found the space out-wide to pull a try back for Dyson's with Ashley Jones adding the conversion.
However, Dysons promising revival was short-lived as The Chase dug-in and when Dan Smith re-entered the game, the former Poolbrook school tag-rugby hero added two more tries to his hat-tick tally to help The Chase team to a 49-14 victory.
