THE sun shone for thousands of festival-goers who lined the streets of Evesham at the weekend for the two-yearly town carnival.

Saturday's party had a 1970s theme and included 14 colourful floats, with everything from Tops of the Pops to the main attraction - the original Chitty Chitty Bang Bang car.

Lucky raffle winners Luke Gittos and Becky Fowler enjoyed a trip in the world-famous vehicle, which featured in the 1968 film of the same name, and there were also marching bands, superheroes and stalls throughout the day.

Evesham Community Hospital radio, the town's sea cadets and even the Army had floats during the event, which was organised by Evesham's Round Table.

"It went really, really well. The weather was great, the sun was out and Evesham was packed," said Andrew Laver, carnival committee chairman.

"The procession route was full for a two or three-mile stretch and it was a great draw for kids and adults alike to have the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang car.

"We were really well supported by local businesses, the public, the town council and everyone who came on the day and we are very grateful for that."

The Round Table collected a total of £3,600 from the carnival and will split the money between charities nominated by those who took part with floats during the day.

The festival is held every two years and it took about six months to plan, co-ordinate and bring together.

This sort of event is about bringing the community together. The money we raised for charity really is a bonus, Mr Laver added.

It was a lot of hard work trying to organise the event alongside having a normal job but it was very satisfying to see everyone out together, smiling and laughing.

"It made the whole effort worthwhile.
