MOTORISTS are braced for a rise in fuel prices.

A litre of unleaded petrol had risen to around 83p per litre, today, with diesel at 85p.

The increases came after oil costs rose around the world following terrorist attacks in Saudi Arabia, the biggest oil-producer.

"I only heard about the rises on the news this morning and I'm filling up now," said Jamila Williams, from St John's, at the Lower Wick service station.

"Having a car is a necessity. But it isn't just cars that would be affected, it is transport as a whole. The Government should try to get prices down as much as possible."

Surcharge

Other drivers agreed that the Government should act, suggesting a 2p fuel duty rise planned for September should now be axed.

"The main thing is whether the Chancellor implements the surcharge," Brian Edwards, of Lower Wick, told the Evening News.

"It'll be a bit of a psychological trigger point, I think, because motorists might think it's an injustice."

Ricky Hunt, the chairman of Fuel Force - the independent suppliers to the Lower Wick garage and 166 others around the to the Lower Wick garage and 166 others around the country - thought rises to 86p or 88p a litre by the end of the week are "inevitable".

"A lot of things are coming together that aren't boding too well.

"But it tends to be a very mature market now. Everyone's a little better at negotiation and the oil companies are working hard to keep prices down."
