AT the May 18 meeting, members heard a very interesting talk by Major Woodfield. He told several amusing tales of his long and varied life in the army.
At an early age he decided to enlist in the Grenadier Guards. In 1949, he took part in the first Trooping the Colour parade in tunic order since before the Second World War.
He spent time at Caterham as squad instructor and in 1953 rejoined the 2nd Battalion in Chelsea Barracks for public duties and the Coronation. After spending several years in North Africa, he went with the Parachute Company to Cyprus. He also served in the SAS with very gruelling training in Borneo.
After 22 years' service, he was commissioned into the regiment, finally retiring in 1983.
Vickie Barker gave the vote of thanks. Janis Hutton won the raffle. The next meeting is on Tuesday, June 8, at Alcester Methodist Church at 8pm when there will be a summer flowers demonstration by Mark Garvie.
