THE Avon was again awash with sails as a large turnout of Evesham SC boats enjoyed the warm sunshine and steady breeze that ensured some super action at the town's Common Road club last Sunday.
Simon Styles had set a fabulous course for the opener - the fourth event in the Comm-odores Cup Series.
All the competitors were keen to be off on a fast downstream to take the first of many marks of the course.
Congestion was inevitable and, like the previous week, Ian Haywood and John Pick-ford benefited from the mistakes of others and managed to break away.
With clear air in their sails they now held the upper hand although both Alastair Gordon and Roger Middleton stayed in close pursuit before Haywood crossed the line narrowly ahead of Pickford.
Peter Green was smartly away in the second race with Haywood and the Baylis boat making for the first mark.
However, Green was first there and didn't look back as he steadily increased his advantage in the excellent conditions.
The main interest was now in the fight for runners-up spot and the result was in doubt right up to the finish.
A strengthening breeze on the last run down the river saw all the chasing craft closing up with the beat to the line deciding the minor positions.
It was Pickford, Haywood and Long who eventually finished second, third and fourth respectively behind a triumphant Green.
