IT HAS been a long time in the making - but such is history.

Alcester's Roman heritage centre was formally opened on Friday with all the pomp and glamour it deserved.

There were Roman soldiers, modern-day civic dignitaries (including an MP) and even a television personality on hand to make sure the job was done well.

Roman expert Guy de la Bedoyere, best known for his work on Channel 4's Time Team, performed a libation (pouring of sacrifical drink) over a piece of a Roman altar (found during a dig behind Lloyd's bank) to make a deal with the gods over the museum's future.

He was flanked by soldiers from the Ermine Street Guard Roman re-enactment troupe as he made the dedication in Latin - followed by the English translation.

"To the gods and shades of the ancient Romans we dedicate this museum. May it be of good omen, an instruction to the young, a delight to the old, of use and benefit to all.

"Floreat Roman Alcester - may Roman Alcester flourish."

David Moulson, chairman of the Alcester Heritage Trust and long-time campaigner for the museum, heaved a sigh of relief after the formalities. In his speech, he said: "At last, our baby is born."

Lottery representative Elizabeth Perkins said: "I am delighted to the be representative of the people who gave you the money, because it has been well worth it."

The museum, at Globe House, opened its doors to the public in February and since then, more than 1,600 people have visited.

It is open on Fridays and Saturdays from 10am-4pm and Sundays from 2pm to 5pm. Entry is free.
