ATHLETICS: Lee Valentine became Kidderminster and Stourport's first Midland champion after a long wait of more than 10 years.

Valentine won the U-17s boys' triple jump at the Midland U-20s Track and Field Championships over the weekend at the Alexandra Stadium in Birmingham.

The teenager doubled up the glory by winning with a new personal best leap of 13.22 metres.

Valentine claimed the Worcestershire title in Stourport last month along with the long jump honours.

And another county champion, Charlotte Berrington, was delighted to achieve an English Schools qualifying high jump distance on Bank Holiday Monday.

Berrington, of Kidderminster, is now available to be selected for July's English Schools Championships in Gateshead.

She recorded 1.55m in a Birmingham Rowheath open meet at Edgbaston's Munrow Sports Centre.

The Haybridge High School pupil also competed in the Midland U-20s at the weekend, despite suffering the effects of a heavy cold.

Berrington, 14, was fourth in the U-15s high jump and javelin with distances of 1.45m and 22.61m respectively, as well as finishing seventh in the long jump with 4.32m.

Tim Wilson racked up a personal best in the U-17s javelin at the Midlands competition, throwing 43.25m and ending up seventh overall.

In the running events, Aiden Dourneen was 10th in the U-17s 1,500m in four minutes 25.31 seconds, while sister Elizabeth was seventh in the U-20s 1,500m in 5-12.55.
