A WORCESTERSHIRE farmer says he is willing to join a blockade in order to force the Government to lower the tax burden on the cost of fuel.

Mark Rawlings, who runs a 400-acre farm in Cleeve Prior, near Evesham, said only this morning he placed an order for fuel at around 22p a litre - a 40 per cent increase on what he paid this time last year.

"If they wanted a blockade and needed a tractor we'd be there," said the father of four.

"Farmers and lorry drivers need to stand together to get this fuel

tax down."

"We are now starting to collect the grass and harvest so we are using the machines a lot more."

Across the UK the average price of unleaded petrol has risen by around 7p a litre over the past month, to 83p a litre, and there are fears of fuel protests and panic-buying.

The most expensive filling station in Worcester yesterday was Holywell Motors, in Comer Road, St John's, at 88.9p a litre, while the cheapest were Tesco and Sainsbury's at 79.9p.

Yesterday, Conservative leader Michael Howard said he would back any legal protests.
