I VISITED Gheluvelt Park a fortnight ago and saw that the council had put up notices warning that anyone interfering with the nesting swans would be prosecuted.
It seems to have done the trick as five cygnets hatched there a week ago.
How different things are now that the cygnets have hatched. They have had to be rescued more than once after falling down the waterfall and ending up in the brook.
Washed
Last year, a cygnet hatched in Gheluvelt Park, only to be washed into the Severn and killed by a pair of territorial swans there. If the council cares about these beautiful birds, surely they should install some strong netting or similar in order to prevent the new brood from meeting such an end.
