BROADWAY parish council intends to fight BT's plans to remove a payphone from the village.

Clerk Eddie Vickers told the council the removal of the kiosk near the junction of Leamington Road and High Street would affect many elderly residents in the area who did not have home phones or mobiles.

The council plans object on the grounds that another payphone in Leamington Road has already been withdrawn and residents would have to walk to the old post office for the nearest phone.

Mr Vickers said the payphone was also a listed kiosk which could make it difficult for BT to remove.

The payphone is one of 14 in Wychavon which BT would like to remove, leaving 145 payphones, 36 of which make a loss for the company.

Paul Hendron, director of BT payphones, said: "We recognise that people have concerns about plans to reduce payphones, but I would like to reassure them that BT is still committed to the service, particularly for the communities who need us most."
