STRATFORD residents will have the chance to take to the stage and express their thoughts on living in Shakespeare's home town during a new RSC event.

The company is looking for people to create their own piece of work on the theme of living in Stratford for the Stratford Talking event, which will be part of its forthcoming New Work Festival.

The works could then be performed in front of hundreds of people at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.

Project director Fiona Lindsay said: "I'm delighted that Stratford Talking will be the first New Work Festival event to open in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. The festival is a wonderful opportunity for the RSC to discover new and expressive voices. We are committed to extending this season within our local community. There's a lot of talent in Stratford and we want to help show it off."

Each entry should be between two and 10 minutes long and should fit into the category of prose, poetry, song, monodrama, sketch or reportage.

All work must be original and can be submitted by individuals or groups aged over 18 who will perform the work themselves.

Entries must be received by Thursday, July 1, and successful applicants will then work with the company during September to have pieces ready for their premiere on Sunday, October 3.

Anyone who would like more information can attend an open meeting at the Swan Theatre on Sunday at 4pm or write, enclosing an A4 self-addressed envelope, to Stratford Talking, c/o RSC events, RST, Waterside, Stratford-upon-Avon, CV37 6BB.

l The RSC is on the lookout for its latest star - a dog to appear in its forthcoming production of The Two Gentlemen of Verona.

Casting is under way for the role of Crabbe, a large, long-haired scruffy and loveable dog, who must be able to lie still and quiet while being talked about and to steal or catch food when tossed.

Ideally the dog would be able to perform at the Swan Theatre in Stratford and at more than 10 leisure centres across the country when the production goes on tour.
