Those people of Malvern who love walking the Hills and have in the past few years appreciated the grazing sheep, would do well to ask the Conservators to look again at recent unhappy events relating to the shepherd, Richard Smith.
Have any of the Conservators spent time on the Hills with the shepherd since the beginning of the year, taking note of his experiences? Have they listened to what he has been saying about the scope of the work?
Although it is a pleasant image, shepherds do not sit all day playing the flute, wearing a felt hat and smock. However, they do know and love their sheep and their care of them (not always cosy) is full-time, even though the actual hours required may be less than this.
The efficient way in which Richard gathered in the flock just hours before the Foot & Mouth embargo took hold was impressive; as is also the fencing below British Camp which protects both sheep and motorist.
Probably everyone walking the southern Hills in the early morning, especially in winter, have heard Richard's cheery greeting.
In addition, he has been a good friend to very many sheep owners (and their sheep) in the Malvern Hills area.
Conservators - please think again.
