WITH respect, your own Opinion column, together with your correspondents, Messrs Jupp and Simmons give a grudging support to the police in their very difficult task of keeping law and order.

Your correspondents seek to co-operate with the police but only on their terms.

Anyone who watched the BBC Midlands news programme on Wednesday, June 23, and saw the scenes of utter degradation and squalid behaviour of young people in Broad Street, Birmingham, due to alcohol, can only be disgusted at what it expects of the police in this age of enlightenment.

If Ledbury police and the presiding magistrates in Hereford exercise their jurisdiction, as they have done in this matter, then Mr Jupp of all people should support them wholeheartedly.

The message that the authorities are sending to the community is clear enough. Behave yourselves as responsible citizens or else your privileges will be withdrawn!

I believe the authorities have judged correctly.

HAROLD R POOLEY, Upperhall Close, Ledbury.
