OCCASIONALLY the weathermen make a mistake with their forecast, as high winds and pouring rain were expected throughout The Worcester-shire GC lady captain's day at the Malvern Wells course.

Armed with waterproofs and gale proof umbrellas, a full field of lady golfers set out throughout the day in support of their highly respected lady captain, Jane Tromans, who is having a very successful year in her high office.

In the event, the sun shone throughout the day; blustery winds never arrived and every player experienced a most enjoyable and successful day.

In the Stableford competition, two players in Division One returned scores of 37 points. Di Meakin was declared the winner with Jill Piner in second place. Cathy Harris was third with 34 points.

Val Burton won Division Two, with Sally Agnew second and former lady captain, Pat Longley, third.

Audrey Emery headed Division Three with a par round of 36 points, with April Wilding second and Fran Jackson-Dooley third.

Cath Francis, who had 30 points, scored the best gross Stableford score of the day.

Brenda Jones won the Lady Captain's Salver, for the best Stableford score of the day in any division, with 39 points.

Former lady captain, Jill Exell, had the best score on the par three holes and Cath Francis the best on the par five holes. Ann Read was nearest the pin at the third hole and Heather Morgan nearest at the 15th. Trina Smith was nearest the centre of the fairway at the sixth and Di Meakin won the putting competition with 24 putts.

Pauline Pharaoh won the senior ladies competition, played over seven holes.

The rain and high winds did arrive, as over 65 ladies sat themselves downfor their afternoon tea; all safe in the sanctuary of the clubhouse. The prizes were presented by the lady captain, whose guests included the club chairman, the club captain, the secretary/ manager and the office staff and Richard Lewis, the club's professional.

In the men's midweek medal competition, excellent scores were returned in both Division One and Two.

John Macfarlane won Division One with a five under par round of 66. Steven Lane was second with 67 and Mick Lloyd third with 69.

Tony Poyner won Division Two with the best score of the day, a six under par score of 65. Larry Long was second and Ian Smith third.

In the team matches, the Worcestershire Ladies had an excellent result in the Scratch League with a win in their home game against Maxstoke Park by 3 games to 1 .

The mixed team also returned an emphatic win in their game against Worcester Golf and Country Club. Playing at home, The Worcester-shire side ran out winners by seven matches to five.

Success has also come to the club this week off the course. Everyone who plays the course comments on the excellence of the surroundings and the good state of the course. One of the green keepers, Richard Wakefield, has been selected to represent Hartpury College at the regional final of the Toro Student Green Keeper of the Year Award. Richard will now represent the West Midlands region in the finals of the competition to be held later in July.

Like weathermen, golf writers can also be proved wrong. Last week I encouraged club members, seeking the fame of achieving a hole in one, to play with Stan Rone.

Veteran golfer Roy Smith chose to ignore my advice. Playing with his son Neil, Roy achieved a hole in one with a five iron at the 163 yard third hole.
