THE name of a Malvern road was changed by order of Malvern Urban District Council, according to a Gazette report of 50 years ago.

What was formerly Peckham's Grove became henceforth known as Knoll Lane.

The road, near St Andrew's Church in Poolbrook, had been given its original name by the council's streets committee because it preserved an ancient title associated with the districts.

But it seems the road's residents themselves protested at the name, which they considered "suggests suburbia or an avenue of trees which we don't possess".

They petitioned the council, asking for the name Knoll Lane to be adopted instead.

"After all, we live in a lane, so why not call it one?" commented one resident.
